From humble backyard beginnings to over 200 international awards, Adelaide’s Prohibition Liquor Co. is taking centre stage in the world of Australian craft distilling.
Known for its meticulous sourcing of Australian native botanicals, they produce a range of small-batch unique combination gins however, the Field Blend Shiraz Gin is the bold scene-stealer. It’s ideal for those nights when you’re not quite up for another glass of red but also not ready to call it a night.
Enter grape infused gin. A seductive hybrid, Field Blend blurs the lines between wine and spirit. Inspired by classical co-fermentation techniques more common in winemaking than distilling. The script? Shiraz takes the lead role, supported by a talented cast of varietals — Grenache, Nero d’Avola, Touriga, Mataro, Tempranillo, and even Chardonnay. All the grapes are sourced within McLaren Vale wine region (there’s actually a map on the bottle that shows where everything is picked). The Shiraz and Grenache are selected from Jericho family wines, and Zarella supports the smaller picks.
The result is a deeply textured, ruby hue, richly aromatic spirit that balances jammy fruit, mulled spice, and a piney juniper backbone.
Try it neat over a block of ice for full dramatic effect, as a classic gin and tonic, or take the cocktail route with their gin sour mix (gin cocktail suggestions here).
A nightcap worthy of a final bow.
