Keith Tulloch is a small, family-operated Hunter Valley winery, with seven vineyards across the region and the Field of Mars Vineyard firmly established as its home site. Fourth-generation winemaker Keith learnt his craft from his father and expanded his knowledge through winemaking sabbaticals around Australia and France, including time with Rhône vignerons.
The Field of Mars vineyard sits in Central Pokolbin, its vines planted in 1968 on the ancient floodplains of Rothbury Creek. Winding creek beds and alluvial sandy soils lend the site its distinctive voice. Believing in quality over quantity the boutique winery produces small-batch Semillon, Chardonnay, Viognier, Shiraz and, more recently, Touriga.
Single-varietal, the Viognier opens with a gracious, expressive perfume of apricot lifted by florals, ginger and honey. On the palate, ripe peach and apricot deliver layered textural richness, with ten months in French oak adding gentle warmth. Full-bodied, this wine lingers like a Hitchcockian pause — deliberate, suspenseful, and captivating. With just 55 dozen produced, the limited-release wine unfolds slowly, inviting reflection long after the applause has faded, a rare and contemplative nightcap.
