Should I have a child? It’s a question most women ask themselves whether they are in a relationship or not. Emma Sandall bravely shares her dilemma in An Ambivalent Woman of 37.

The cabaret performance is a highly original dancing, singing, multimedia theatrical experience.

Inspired by Sheila Heti’s bestselling book Motherhood, Sandall delivers laughter to a serious question as she ponders the consequences of her life with or without children. Oscillating from one side to the other, she explores the moral, social and psychological pressures unique to this life-altering decision.

Dressed in white Sandall has incredible control of her movements. Switching between barefoot, red socks and stiletto heels, she weaves her body through and into Monty Python-esque interactive animations and projections. An accomplished dancer, she has performed across the world with companies including Bejart Ballet Lausanne, The Royal Ballet, Scottish Ballet and West Australian Ballet.

Whilst Sandall owns the stage, clever stage lighting by Roderick Van Gelder allowed for incredible shadow play and enhanced the storytelling element of the performance.

Working in collaboration with iconic Australian composer Kats-Chernin, Sandall is joined on stage by internationally renowned pianist Yanghee Kim playing an electric piano.

Eccentric, thought-provoking and entertaining. This is a great show for mothers, want to be mothers, those questioning having children or women who have felt the pressure of motherhood at some point.

3.5 stars.
