On the corner of Challis Avenue, Potts Point is a fabulous bar and restaurant with a menu built around Spanish influences. Bar Sopra is less than ten minutes from Hayes Theatre, it opens early and closes late, making it ideal for pre or post theatre dining.

The displays of cured meats and tins of anchovies cleverly highlight the menu’s dedicated charcuterie section. Or if you’re after more than just a snack, Bar Sopra offers a wide-range of appetizing Spanish tapas, from small to larger servings such as burgers and paella.

We focused on the small bites and there are a few must-orders. The deliciously salty Spanish white anchovies, served on crisp chips and topped with roasted peppers. And for a fresh dish bursting with flavour, you can’t go past the white fish crudo, covered with harissa aioli, native finger lime dressing. Resisting empanadas is futile for me and we ordered two of the three options. The beef, plus with the vegetarian option spinach and cheese. Happily, they are the big size, so great for sharing and come with a side of chillies.

The extensive wine list includes wines from Australia and Europe. There’s even an orange and chilled wines section. We selected the 2022 Via Barrosa Albarino Spain. Great Albarino, nice firm body, tropical, ripe with notes of apricot, pineapple and citrus, and a dash of minerality, giving it a zing finish that wakes up your taste buds.

If cocktails are more your flavour, take a seat at the bar on one of the tall highbacked green velvet chairs. The restaurant serves several creative and unique drinks, which they rotate seasonally. Try Silky Boi, described as smoother than the bonnet of a Porsche. It’s made with Fortaleza Reposado, Tromba Blanco, agave and chocolate bitters.

Spanish ambience flows through the intimate 20-seater restaurant. If you’re dining solo, take a seat along one of the long street level windows, a prime spot for watching the eclectic residents and visitors of Potts Point. Or if you’re keen for post-theatre discussion, select the laid-back burnt orange leather chair. With indoor and alfresco dining, Bar Sopra is the perfect place to enjoy tasty Spanish, pre or post show.
