Gavroche Brasserie in Chippendale leans into Parisian nostalgia with dark timber décor, low lighting and vintage artwork that set the tone. The vibe is cozy-chic, a clear homage to French bistros, anchored by a 1950 Parisian bicycle suspended overhead. The charming atmosphere is further lifted by a soundtrack of French jazz.

The menu is a parade of French classics. Think steak frites, duck confit, soupe à l’oignon truffée layered with melting comté cheese, and a pâté de foie de canard (duck liver parfait) that arrives with sweet blueberries. The escargots de Bourgogne are essential ordering – six succulent Burgundy snails bathed in garlic butter and parsley. You will use every last piece of the baguette on that sauce. And that same garlic-butter pull continues, with the need to order the moules frites, satisfying with a side of crispy fries.

Save room for dessert, delivered with theatre via a wheeled-out old-world trolley. Traditional Crêpes Suzette are flambéed tableside with Grand Marnier, and the fondant au chocolat delivers a delightfully decadent indulgence.

The wine list is a strength with a broad selection of French wines by the glass, while other regions appear primarily by the bottle. A 2022 Bourgogne Chardonnay from Roncier, Tramier & Fils, proves an easy match for the richer dishes, cutting through the butter and cream with ease.

While Europe might feel a long way off, Gavroche offers a convincing escape – a dining room that delivers a little theatre, a lot of butter, and a dash of romance.
