Born from Italian roots but firmly planted in the Hunter Valley, De Iuliis Wines has built a reputation for producing top-quality, small-batch wines. The family planted their first vines in 1990 and today the winery is led by winemaker Mike De Iuliis.
The LDR Vineyard Shiraz comes from the family’s Lovedale Road site in the Lower Hunter Valley, beneath the dramatic Brokenback Range. Heritage shiraz cuttings grow here in clay loam over friable red clay soils, a foundation that helps shape the region’s distinctive shiraz style.
In the glass, the 2021 pours a deep red with a vibrant purple hue. Cherry-driven fruit, supported by notes of blueberry, plum and blackberry, with dark chocolate and a dash of pepper adding depth. Medium-bodied and fresh, there’s an earthy quality that reflects delicious savoury Hunter Valley origins.
It’s an ideal companion to the chaotic energy of Evil Dead The Musical. After such gleeful chaos, a glass of shiraz offers a welcome reset. The wine’s bright cherry fruit and savoury edge, rich enough to match the show’s excess, yet fresh enough to bring the evening gently back down to earth once the final demon has been dispatched.
A fitting nightcap after a night of theatrical carnage.
