A one-woman show with minimal staging puts all the emphasis on the performer; however, Paula Arundell triumphs in this macabre production of The Birds.

Based on Daphne du Maurier’s 1952 gothic horror story, which inspired Alfred Hitchcock to craft the cinematic terror of the same name, this version is adapted by Australian writer Louise Fox.

Directed by Matthew Lutton, what’s truly wonderful about Fox’s adaptation is the way it awakens the audience’s imagination. Propelled by Arundell in near darkness, the script comes to life with vivid detail, allowing the mind to conjure its own imagery.

This may not be Hitchcock’s version, but you know an attack from the  flock is coming and when the birds do invade the house, it becomes an assault to the death. Arundell’s performance is fierce and intense.  She ducks, weaves, runs and rolls across the floor, her solo performance providing all the entertainment needed to sustain the story.

An engaging storyteller, Arundell paints a visceral picture through movement, multiple voices and evocative expressions. Within seconds, she switches from a sing-song voice when talking to the children, to deep guttural accents for the men of the community. At times, the words are poetic and lyrical — “ascend the path of sorrows”. As she emphasises each phrase, the audience leans in, fully engaged.

As the tension builds, so does the audience’s fear and trepidation. The story is unnerving and gory; however, Fox also draws on conspiracy theories, bringing moments of levity to the production.

The production begins in pitch blackness. It’s so dark that at first the stage appears bare. Kat Chan’s minimal set design puts the focus on Arundell. The black walls and floor heighten the impact of Niklas Pajanti’s lighting, which punctuates the attacks through jarring flashes. Meanwhile, stretches of silence build suspense, while J David Franzke’s soundscape of bird noises intensifies the horror. Together, the elements ensure The Birds will have audience members jumping back in their seats with genuine fear.

With swooping season pending, this play will strike terror into the hearts of audiences and leave them looking at their feather friends through new eyes.
