You’d be forgiven for assuming a nightcap should be a red wine or something stronger, but sometimes the end of an evening calls for a spicy, refreshing finish, and that’s where Gewürztraminer enters the scene. Known for its intense aromatic profile, this textural wine offers a fragrant, full-bodied alternative for a post-show pour.

Perched at 900 metres above sea level in the cool-climate New England region of northern NSW, Topper’s Mountain is among the country’s highest family-owned vineyards. Surrounded by state forest and farmed using organic practices, the vineyard sits on rare volcanic red basalt soils, making it truly unique in the Australian wine landscape.

Working with Mediterranean varieties, Topper’s Mountain crafts wines that are textural, aromatic and full of character. Its Gewürztraminer is a compelling expression of what these soils and low-impact viticultural practices can achieve.

Despite its ripe, aromatic profile, this is not a sweet wine. Delicious aromas of Turkish delight, rose petals and lychee take the lead, followed by a crisp, oily palate with a subtly honeyed finish. Spicy ginger, alpine herbs and citrusy lime add complexity, creating a wine with plenty of character.

Pairing: try it with a truly stinky cheese such as Epoisses or a washed rind.
